Maître des clésElite Tennis in Cyprus: An Objective Overview
The aim of this report is to provide an objective overview of elite tennis in Cyprus. This report is not a critique, nor absolute truth. It seeks to provide an honest description of the strengths and limitations on the island.
The Core Strengths of Cypriot Tennis
Cyprus has a very strong training programme, with significant results up to the U14 level. Clubs and the Federation organise many Tennis Europe U12, U14 and U16 tournaments, as well as ITF junior tournaments (J30 to J100).
The climate is also highlighted as one of the island’s strengths, with plenty of sunshine.
For my part, I’m truly impressed by the success of tennis in Cyprus in the U12 and U14 age groups. The job has been done well, with limited resources. Coming from France, I know what it’s like to have a rich and powerful tennis federation. And yet, young Cypriots are achieving equivalent results. Sometimes better.
I find the welcome from people, in the clubs and in everyday life, simply incredible.
The Challenges and Structural Limitations
The Question of Expatriation
Why is Cyprus still waiting for the next Baghdatis? Let us remember that Marcos came to France at the age of 14. First to Paris. Then to Nice.
Coaches and some parents consider expatriation to be an essential condition for success on the professional circuit. This requires funds that few families have.
Expertise and Infrastructure
Players and families also want coaches with greater expertise and more personalised training (private coaching).
The lack of indoor courts means it is not possible to play on rainy days.
The Mental and Cultural Aspect
An experienced Belgian coach on the ITF circuit, who is familiar with Cypriot and Greek culture, notes, however, a tendency to stay within comfort zones rather than take the risk of trying something new.
Perspectives: Transmission and Looking Forward
Then, for me, there is a problem with the transmission of the process. Many excellent coaches and former players have shared accurate, highly relevant information with me about the reality of high-level tennis and what it means to succeed. Everyone needs to find the time to sit down around a table and discuss all this.
What is the real circuit? It is up to the older generations to guide the new ones. There are significant resources to be activated.
Living away from home or leaving your comfort zone, as the Belgian coach told me, requires preparation and anticipation. Perhaps this will allow new talent to flourish in Cyprus. That is all I wish for this European island.
Acknowledgements
I would like to thank the families, players, media, clubs and coaches who have shared this valuable information with me.
