Choosing a private high-performance tennis coach is the most important decision a family makes on the road to the ITF and WTA tours. Here is how to evaluate a coach objectively — and what a modern, data-driven private coaching programme should include.
By Geoffroy Dupuis, GPTCA International Coach and founder of JuniorToPro, an independent high-performance tennis structure dedicated to players moving from the ITF Junior Tour to the professional circuit.
What is a private high-performance tennis coach?
A private high-performance tennis coach works one-to-one with a single player (or a very small group) whose goal is international competition: ITF Junior, ITF World Tennis Tour, WTA or ATP. Unlike a group academy programme, the entire plan — technique, tactics, physical preparation, mental training, tournament schedule and recovery — is built around one athlete.
If your goal is the professional tour, this guide complements our junior-to-pro transition roadmap.
Private coach vs. tennis academy
An academy is like a large restaurant kitchen: efficient, with excellent equipment, but the menu is designed for many guests. A private coach is a personal chef: fewer resources in one place, but every decision is made for one person. The best projects often combine both — a private coach who leads the plan and uses academy or federation facilities when useful.
| Tennis academy | Private high-performance coach | |
|---|---|---|
| Ratio coach/player | 1:4 or more | 1:1 |
| Individual annual plan | Sometimes | Always |
| Coach at tournaments | Shared, occasional | Planned, as a travelling coach |
| Decision-making | Academy system | Player, family and coach together |
7 criteria to choose the best high-performance tennis coach
- Proven experience on the ITF and WTA tours. Ask for the number of professional and junior tournaments coached and concrete results.
- Recognised international qualifications. GPTCA (accredited by the ATP Tour), ITF high-performance courses, national state diplomas.
- Integrity certification. ITIA / TIPP certification is a minimum standard for anyone travelling with players.
- A measurable method. Objective data (video, biomechanics, force plates, load monitoring) and written reports, not only feelings.
- Injury prevention culture. Load indicators, well-being monitoring and a clear return-to-play protocol.
- Playing level. A coach who can still hit at a high level gives better quality practice and sparring.
- Independence and transparency. A written agreement with clear objectives, duration, budget and evaluation points.
What private coaching at JuniorToPro includes
Clear annual objectives, evaluated regularly
Every season starts with written objectives (ranking, technical, physical, mental) and a quarterly performance report shared with the player, the family, the staff and the agent.
Technical science and biomechanics
Every stroke is analysed with Baseline Vision and our biomechanical application J2P Motion, with a particular focus on the serve. Force and speed profiles are measured with Kinvent K-Plates, K-Move and K-Grip — for example with our Single-Leg Reactive Split-Step test (read how we build a faster first step).
Tactical identity
We identify the patterns that win points for the player, then build them towards professional standards through match analysis and video review.
Physical, mental and recovery programme
Physical preparation, mental training with Blazepod and sophrology, nutrition and physiotherapy are integrated in one plan. Recovery tools such as compression boots and cryotherapy leg sleeves are part of the daily routine.
Load monitoring and injury prevention
Training load is tracked with TRIMP, Monotony and ACWR, with a daily well-being score and a red-flag system in the J2Pro Circuit app.
Tournament coaching and career management
I travel with players as their travelling coach on Tennis Europe, ITF Junior, ITF World Tennis Tour and WTA events, and support families on career decisions, brand development and equipment partnerships.
